Fixed Shower Heads

What is Fixed Shower Heads

Fixed shower heads are also known as rain shower heads. They're called fixed because they’re plumbed in permanently; you can’t move them around. The shower head fits onto the ceiling, usually has a large diameter, and discharges water like a rain shower. It's no-frills and typically smaller in size, with diameters from 5 inches or less. For those of you who just want solid pressure from a shower head without all the bells and whistles, this is the way to go.

Benefits of Fixed Shower Heads

Simplicity and Quick Operation
A fixed shower head offers this simple pleasure, providing a consistent water flow. Without any adjustments to the spray settings needed, you can have a quick and refreshing shower, especially when you’re in a hurry.

Durability and Longevity
Built to last, these shower heads can withstand daily use without showing signs of wear and tear. It’s an investment that pays off in the long run. Their fixed nature means fewer moving parts, which translates to less potential for damage.

Cost-Effectiveness
Often more affordable upfront, fixed shower heads also boast low maintenance, saving you money over time. Their simple design means fewer features that could break or malfunction, leading to potential savings in repair or replacement costs.

Installation and Maintenance
While they might be fixed in place, their installation is anything but complicated. And with fewer moving parts, maintenance is a breeze. Cleaning is also straightforward, with many models designed to resist mineral buildup.

Water Pressure and Spray Patterns
Customize your shower experience with adjustable water pressure and multiple spray patterns. Whether you want a gentle mist or a powerful jet, the choice is yours. Some fixed shower heads also come with rotating nozzles, allowing you to change the spray pattern without adjusting the entire head.

How Often Should you Replace Your Fixed Shower Heads

Changing shower heads every six to eight months is often recommended, but many people are unaware. Like most fixtures, a shower head's lifespan depends on quality, maintenance level, and usage frequency. Certain germs can grow in shower heads and cause respiratory infections, especially in susceptible individuals. So, medical authorities advise changing shower heads regularly.

What is the Installation Height of a Fixed Shower Head

If you've ever tried to get clean in a shower that’s far too tall or too short, you know it can be a struggle. Crouching down for 15 minutes under the water is not a relaxing experience. While standard fixed shower heads are typically placed around 80” high, they can range from 68 to 86” for people ranging from 5’ to 6’6” tall. Of course, there is no standard fixed shower head height code, so when it comes down to it, you can place your fixed shower head wherever it feels best to you. The maximum height for a fixed shower head is really up to your discretion, depending on your household’s needs.

4 Signs You Might Need a New Fixed Shower Head

Change in Water Pressure
As your shower head gets more and more use a change in water pressure can occur. This could be something as small as the head getting loose which is easily fixed by readjusting it. In other cases a shower head may just be worn from constant use, making it less reliable to control water pressure.

Water Leaks
If you’re noticing that your shower head has developed a leak it may be time to consider a new one. In some cases a leak can occur due to a small fix such as a warn-out washer ring which needs to be replaced. However, if the leak keeps occurring it may be time to consider investing in a new faucet.

Appearance of Black Mold
If you find any hard water spots in your shower, you should look for little black spots in the shower head. Eliminating black mold is extremely challenging and often requires professional mold removal services. Replacing the shower head is typically less expensive than removing the mold. Moreover, this type of mold poses a risk to your health as well. So, you can replace your one with an energy-efficient shower head to prevent water spots.

Sediment Buildup
The water that flows into your house and your pipes is treated with chemicals and additives that make it safe for consumption. Inside your shower head there is a screen or water restrictor which helps filter these chemicals, additives, and debris out. These screens can get dirty over time causing a buildup of sediment in and around your shower head. If you notice a buildup of sediment in or around your shower head it may be time to replace it.

How to Install a Fixed Shower Head

1. Remove the old shower head

It may sound obvious but before you begin do make sure the shower is turned off! There’s no need to turn off the water at the mains, just as the shower controls is fine. Next it's how to take the shower head off. Simply unscrew the old shower head by twisting it anticlockwise at the point where it connects to the shower arm or hose. You shouldn’t need any tools but if the connection is too tight to turn by hand, use a wrench or locking pliers to get a better grip.

2. Clean the shower arm or hose

Once the old head has been removed, check the shower arm or hose connection for rust, debris or limescale build up and give it a thorough clean. Pay special attention to the rubber washer inside and replace it if there are any signs of damage.

3. Apply plumber's tape

Starting at the bottom of the Shower Arm, apply the Thread Seal Tape clockwise to ensure that it doesn't unwind when you're screwing the Shower Head onto the Shower Arm. Tightly wrap the thread seal tape 3-4 times moving up to the top of the Shower Arm. Press the Thread Seal Tape firmly to the Shower Arm to make sure it adheres properly.

4. Screw on the replacement shower head

Next simply line up the shower head with the shower arm or hose and screw it on in a clockwise direction. There’s no need to use any tools, it will be tight enough once you can’t turn it anymore.

5. Test for leaks

Finally, wipe the connection point to ensure it is dry then turn the shower on and watch for any leaks. Hold a piece of kitchen or toilet roll around the joint. If there’s even the slightest leak, it will soon soak into the paper and become obvious.

What Should I Consider When Choosing a Shower rod to Match my Fixed Shower Head

Connection: First, take a look at how the shower head connects to the shower rail. There are different types of connections, like threaded connections (NPT) or sliding brackets. Make sure the shower head you choose has the same type of connection as your shower rail. That way, it will fit properly and stay securely in place.

Mounting: Next, think about how the shower head mounts to the shower rail. Some shower heads are designed to be mounted on the wall, while others are meant for ceiling installation. Pick a shower head that matches the mounting style of your shower rail. This ensures a stable setup and prevents any installation headaches.

Size & weight: Consider the size and weight of the shower head. If your shower rail is delicate or lightweight, choose a shower head that is not too heavy or bulky. This helps prevent strain on the shower rail and ensures a secure attachment.

Adjustability: If you want the flexibility to adjust the height or angle of the shower head, make sure your shower rail allows for it. Look for a shower head with adjustable features that can be positioned just the way you like it.

Design: Lastly, think about the design of your shower rail and choose a shower head that complements it. Whether your shower rail has a modern, traditional, or vintage style, finding a shower head that matches will create a cohesive look in your bathroom.

What Causes a Clogged Fixed Shower Heads?

Brushed Brass Rain Shower Head

Hard water

Water that has high levels of calcium, magnesium, and, sometimes divalent and trivalent metallic elements is called hard water. Hard water results in scale build-up in water heaters and pipes. When this scale is moved by the force of water to the faucet, the scale gets trapped behind the shower head's wire or plastic screen and restricts the flow of water.

Satin Brass Shower Head

Other debris

Other types of debris may clog the shower head, as well. Over time, the rubber gasket between the shower head and the water pipe may degrade, sending small rubber particles up against the filter screen, where they remain. Additionally, other parts of the shower head may degrade and fall apart over time.

Black Fixed Shower Head

Flow restrictor

Some shower heads have a built-in flow restrictor designed to save water and energy. These simple plastic disks do save water but at the expense of water pressure. Older flow restrictors can be easily removed, but new models may not be removable.

How to Unclog a Fixed Shower Heads on the Wall

Remove the Shower head
Detach the shower head from the fixture. You can probably do this by loosening the nut that keeps it fixed to the pipe and then unscrewing the head. If not, follow the manufacturer’s directions.

Rinse the Shower head Thoroughly
Run the shower head under a faucet so you can rinse as much debris and grime out of the nozzle as possible.

Make Your Cleaning Solution
Combine the baking soda and vinegar in a container large enough to completely submerge the Shower head. Again, use three parts vinegar to one part baking soda.

Submerge and Soak Your Shower head
Submerge the Shower head in the solution for at least an hour, and ideally longer, especially if there’s a lot of buildup. The longer it sits, the more it will loosen the grime.

Rinse, Wipe Down, and Reinstall the Shower head
Rinse the Shower head to remove all of the solution, and wipe it down. Then, reinstall the Shower head and run your shower to see if you’ve cleared the clog or restored water pressure.

FAQ

Q: Why is my fixed shower head always clogged?

A: Fixed shower heads clog over time because of a buildup of mineral deposits specifically calcium. You may notice water spraying out of the nozzle in random directions, part of your shower head is completely clogged, or poor water pressure. If you have hard water, you’re particularly vulnerable and may need to clean your shower head more often.

Q: How to prevent the fixed shower head from clogging?

A: Install a water softener or use a shower filter to reduce mineral deposits. Clean your fixed shower head regularly by removing it and soaking it in a vinegar solution to dissolve mineral buildup. Use a toothbrush or small brush to remove any debris or deposits from the surface of the fixed shower head. Avoid bar soaps that leave soap scum residue, which can cause clogs.

Q: How often should I clean the fixed shower head?

A: It is recommended to clean the fixed shower head every few months. If you live in an area with hard water, it is recommended to clean it more frequently. Regular cleaning will help prevent clogging and maintain optimal water flow.

Q: Should I use a specific cleaning solution to clean my fixed shower head?

A: You can use a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water as a cleaning solution. Simply remove the fixed shower head, soak it in the vinegar solution for a few hours, and wipe off any remaining buildup. Rinse thoroughly before reinstalling the shower head.

Q: What if my fixed shower head is severely clogged and cleaning doesn't help?

A: If cleaning does not improve water flow, you may want to consider replacing the fixed shower head. In some cases, a clog may be caused by an internal problem that cannot be easily fixed by cleaning.

Q: What are the signs of a clogged fixed shower head?

A: Some signs of a clogged fixed shower head include reduced water pressure, an uneven spray, or water coming from different directions. If you notice any of these problems, it's a good idea to check for clogs and clean your shower head.

Q: What does a fixed shower head mean?

A: Fixed shower heads are also known as rain shower heads. They're called fixed because they're plumbed in permanently; you can't move them around! The shower head fits onto the ceiling, usually has a large diameter, and discharges water like a rain shower.

Q: Are all fixed shower heads the same size?

A: It's no-frills and typically smaller in size, with diameters from 5 inches or less. For those of you who just want solid pressure from a shower head without all the bells and whistles, this is the way to go. If you want to get a little bit fancier, you can look for a multi-function fixed shower head.

Q: How tall is a standard fixed shower head?

A: While standard shower heads are typically placed around 80” high, they can range from 68 to 86” for people ranging from 5' to 6'6” tall. Of course, there is no standard shower head height code, so when it comes down to it, you can place your shower head wherever it feels best to you.

Q: What is the life of a fixed shower head?

A: A quality fixed shower head can last between 5 to 10 years before needing a replacement. The valves that control water flow and temperature are subject to wear, especially in areas with hard water.

Q: Do all fixed shower heads have water restrictors?

A: Inside every fixed shower head is a small part called a flow restrictor or flow regulator. This part is designed to control the flow of water to the shower head and it has a significant effect on the water pressure in your shower.

Q: Do you need to shut off water to change fixed shower head?

A: Turn off the shower faucets so you don't get drenched while you're working. There's no need to turn off the water to the house. Unscrew the old shower head by twisting it by hand in a counterclockwise direction. Most heads aren't screwed into place, but if yours is, remove the screws first.

Q: How do you maintain water temperature consistency with a fixed shower head?

A: Install a Thermostatic Mixing Valve: This device mixes hot and cold water to give you a consistent temperature, even when someone else is using water. Pair the fixed shower head with a thermostatic mixing valve, which regulates water temperature and maintains it at a consistent level, preventing sudden changes during your shower.

Q: What is the water flow rate for a typical fixed shower head?

A: The flow rate is typically around 2.5 gallons per minute (GPM), but some models designed for water conservation offer lower rates, such as 1.5 to 2.0 GPM.

Q: How do you prevent leaks in a fixed shower head?

A: Worn gaskets can also allow water to drip. Replace the gasket with a matching one if necessary. Bring your current gasket with you when you purchase a replacement so you can match the size and type. Wrap the shower arm with plumbers (or thread seal) tape.

Q: What are the different spray patterns available in fixed shower heads?

A: Spray patterns can include rain, mist, massage, jet, and aerated streams. Some fixed shower heads offer multiple settings that allow you to switch between different spray patterns.
