Step 1: Remove The Old Shower Head
Before installing a handheld shower head, you’ll first need to remove your old shower head. You can do this by wrapping a washcloth around the top end of the shower arm that’s closest to the wall then clamping your pliers around the washcloth and shower arm to give you a good grip. The washcloth between the shower arm and pliers helps keep the pliers from scratching or damaging your shower arm.
Next, you’ll need to wrap another washcloth around where your old shower head is attached to the shower arm. Then clamp over the washcloth and shower head attachment with your adjustable wrench and turn counterclockwise from the shower arm until your old shower head is completely unscrewed and removed.
Step 2: Prepare
Once you’ve removed and set aside your old shower head, you’ll need clean the threads of the shower arm with an old toothbrush. Then, if there isn’t a rubber washer in your mounting bracket, you’ll need to wrap some pipe thread or teflon tape around the threads of your shower arm a couple of times. If you have a rubber washer in your mounting bracket, you won’t need to apply any pipe thread or teflon tape and can skip this step. Align the mounting bracket with the end of the shower arm and begin screwing it on by hand clockwise until tight.
If you feel it needs to be tighter, you can wrap a washcloth around it and tighten it a little more with your adjustable wrench but keep in mind, you don’t want to tighten it too much and damage the mounting bracket threads or shower arm. When screwing on the mounting bracket, you want the open piece on the end of the mounting bracket to be facing up and the middle threaded piece on the mounting bracket to be facing down because that’s where you’ll attach your shower hose.
Step 3: Assemble
After you’ve installed the mounting bracket, you’ll attach the shower head hose. You’ll attach the shower hose by screwing the regular nut-type end of the hose onto the mounting bracket clockwise and tightening it by hand. Then you’ll attach your new handheld shower head to the cone-shaped end of the shower hose by screwing it on clockwise until tight.
The cone-shaped end of the hose that’s now screwed onto your new handheld shower head handle will slide perfectly into the mounting bracket so you can return your handheld shower head to it’s mounting bracket when it’s not in use or when you want to use it as a mounted shower head. Following these simple and easy handheld shower head installation steps will help you to install your new shower head quickly and effortlessly.
How Can I Fix My Handheld ShowerHead
Leaking Shower Head
Shut off the water to your shower by closing the water valve. Using an adjustable wrench, carefully loosen and remove the shower head from the hose. Check the O-rings inside the shower head for any signs of damage or wear. If they are cracked or worn, replace them. Wrap the plumber's tape (Teflon tape) around the threads of the shower head and the hose to create a watertight seal. Screw the shower head back onto the hose and tighten it securely with the adjustable wrench. Once everything is reassembled, turn the water supply back on and check for any leaks. If there are no leaks, you've successfully fixed your leaking shower head.
Low Water Pressure
Ensure that the hose is not kinked or damaged in any way. Replace it if necessary. Over time, mineral deposits can clog the nozzles, reducing water pressure. Fill a bucket with a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar or a calcium and lime remover. Remove the shower head and soak it in the solution for a few hours. This will dissolve any mineral build-up. After soaking, rinse the shower head with clean water and reattach it to the hose. Some shower heads have a flow restrictor to reduce water usage. If your water pressure is still low after cleaning, you can remove the flow restrictor by unscrewing the shower head. Be sure to keep the restrictor in case you want to reattach it later.
Stuck Adjustment Mechanism
Unscrew the shower head from the hose using an adjustable wrench. Check for any visible debris, soap scum, or mineral deposits that might be preventing the mechanism from moving. Use a screwdriver or a brush to clean the area thoroughly. Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the adjustment mechanism. This will help it move smoothly. Screw the shower head back onto the hose and ensure it's secure.
How do you Clean a blocked Handheld Showerheads
Use Vinegar
You can clean a shower head using nothing more than distilled white vinegar, the king of household cleaning hacks. Simply remove the shower head and soak it in a bowl of vinegar for a few hours. If the buildup is particularly heavy, you may need to soak the shower head overnight. Once the shower head has soaked, scrub it with a toothbrush to remove any remaining deposits. Finally, rinse the shower head well and reattach it to the shower arm. Try running the shower to clean it once again from the inside and get rid of any remaining vinegar. You should now notice an improvement in water pressure.
Use Calcium, Lime, and Rust Remover Solution (CLR Solution)
Calcium, Lime, and Rust Remover (CLR) solution can help to clean a shower head and restore it to its original condition. It's also quicker than using vinegar! Take a plastic container or small bucket and pour into it the CLR solution and warm water in the ratio of 1:1. Then, simply remove the shower head and soak it in the cleaning solution for around two minutes (or as directed by the manufacturer). Afterwards, throw away the cleaning solution and rinse the shower head gently. At this point, you can use a soft brush to scrub away any remaining deposits. Rinse the shower head again thoroughly with water and reattach it to the shower arm.
Use Baking Soda
Simply mix one cup of baking soda with enough water to form a paste, then apply the paste to the shower head and let it sit for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes have passed, use a toothbrush or other soft brush to scrub away the residue. Finally, rinse the shower head with warm water to remove any remaining traces of baking soda. Attach the shower head back to the arm and turn the water on to remove any remaining bits of sediment and/or the baking soda paste.
