Handheld Showerheads

What is Handheld Showerheads

A handheld shower head is a type of shower head that can be held in your hand, making it more versatile than a traditional fixed shower head. It offers a range of benefits, including improved flexibility and convenience, more targeted water flow, and easier cleaning. Handheld shower heads are connected to the wall with a flexible hose that allows for the shower head to be disconnected from its mount. A bracket on the wall holds a handheld shower head in place when not in use.

Benefits of Handheld Showerheads

Increased maneuverability and control
One of the most significant advantages of a handheld showerhead is its increased flexibility and precision. With a fixed showerhead, you’re limited to the water spray’s direction and location, which can be frustrating. However, with a handheld showerhead attachment, you can move the water to spray hard-to-reach areas.

Ease of use for people with limited mobility
For seniors or people with mobility challenges, a handheld showerhead can be a game-changer. If you or a member of your household deals with limited mobility or uses a shower bench or chair, a handheld showerhead allows you to direct the water spray with ease. This feature can make showering less stressful, safer and more comfortable.

Versatility in cleaning and rinsing
Handheld showerheads are also versatile when it comes to cleaning and rinsing. You can use the water’s spray to rinse off shampoo and conditioner and even to clean your shower walls.

Reduce water usage
Handheld showerheads can also help you save water, which is good for the environment and your wallet. Some handheld showerheads have water-saving modes that can further reduce water usage without sacrificing performance.

Kid-friendly
Finally, handheld showerheads are kid-friendly. If you have young children, a handheld showerhead can make bath time easier and more enjoyable. You can use the water spray to rinse off soap and shampoo without getting water in their eyes, making the process less stressful for everyone involved. Another added benefit is handheld showerheads are great for grooming your family pets.

What is the Installation Height of a Handheld Showerhead

Handshowers, or handheld shower heads, are detachable from their wall mounts for full cleaning functionality. They come in single and multi-spray options, whether you’re in the market for a simple bathing device or a pulsating massager. Not only are they great options for your personal shower needs, but they also make bath time for pets a breeze and cleaning your shower much easier. It is recommended to install the handheld showerheads at the height of 72 to 78 inches so that anyone can take the shower head off from its stand and use it.

What is the typical hose length for a handheld showerhead

Most handheld shower heads are about 5 feet long. But, you lose at least 6 inches of actual reach when you consider the bending that the hose has to make to reach the back wall of the shower. And that’s just for standard showers. So, if you’re buying a shower head with hose because you want to fully benefit from the flexibility of the handheld shower head, some extra length can go a long way.

The step up, and best shower hose length for most people, is a 72 inch shower hose. This gives you that extra 12 inches of reach that can mean all the difference. For people with injuries and mobility issues, the best shower head with hose option is one with a metal hose that is at least 72 inches long. It’s especially important if there is a caregiver, as that person can have more flexibility in the shower and provide the safest and easiest way to assist the other person.

Material of Handheld Showerheads
1

Chrome

Chrome finish is the most popular choice for handheld shower heads. It is a type of electroplating that involves coating a metal object with a thin layer of chromium. This gives the shower head a shiny, reflective surface that is resistant to tarnishing and corrosion.

2

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is another popular material for handheld shower heads. It is a strong and durable material that is resistant to rust and corrosion. This makes it a great choice for a shower head that will be exposed to water on a daily basis.

3

Plastic

Plastic is a common material used for handheld shower heads. It is an affordable option that is lightweight and easy to install. However, plastic shower heads may not be as durable as other materials and may be more prone to cracking or breaking.

4

Brass

Brass is a high-quality material that is often used for luxury handheld shower heads. It is a durable and corrosion-resistant material that can withstand high water pressure and temperature. Additionally, brass has a classic and elegant appearance that can add a touch of sophistication to any bathroom.

What to Consider When Choosing Handheld Showerheads

Check Compatibility

Ensure that the handheld showerheads you are considering is compatible with your existing plumbing system. While most handheld showerheads are designed to be universal, it's always advisable to double-check.

Consider Water Pressure

Water pressure varies across different handheld showerheads. Some models offer a solid, refreshing flow, while others provide a softer, soothing spray. Take your personal preferences into account when making your selection.

Look for Quality Materials

The materials used to make the handheld showerheads are important to consider as well. Look for models made from high-quality materials such as chrome or stainless steel, which are durable and resistant to rust and corrosion. Avoid plastic models, as they are more likely to break or wear out over time.

Finish

Popular finish includes chrome, brushed nickel, matte black, and brushed gold et. Matte black is known for its modern and sleek appearance which adds sophistication to contemporary bathrooms. Chrome is a timeless choice. Its shiny reflective surface can effortlessly complement various design themes. Brushed nickel provides a warm and soft look, suitable for both traditional and contemporary settings.

Check the Price

Handheld showerheads are available at a range of price points, from budget-friendly options to high-end models. It’s important to set a budget and stick to it when shopping for a hand shower. Remember that a higher price tag doesn’t always mean a better product. Always look for the utility in your purchase.

How to Install Handheld Showerheads

Step 1: Remove The Old Shower Head
Before installing a handheld shower head, you’ll first need to remove your old shower head. You can do this by wrapping a washcloth around the top end of the shower arm that’s closest to the wall then clamping your pliers around the washcloth and shower arm to give you a good grip. The washcloth between the shower arm and pliers helps keep the pliers from scratching or damaging your shower arm.

Next, you’ll need to wrap another washcloth around where your old shower head is attached to the shower arm. Then clamp over the washcloth and shower head attachment with your adjustable wrench and turn counterclockwise from the shower arm until your old shower head is completely unscrewed and removed.

Step 2: Prepare
Once you’ve removed and set aside your old shower head, you’ll need clean the threads of the shower arm with an old toothbrush. Then, if there isn’t a rubber washer in your mounting bracket, you’ll need to wrap some pipe thread or teflon tape around the threads of your shower arm a couple of times. If you have a rubber washer in your mounting bracket, you won’t need to apply any pipe thread or teflon tape and can skip this step. Align the mounting bracket with the end of the shower arm and begin screwing it on by hand clockwise until tight.

If you feel it needs to be tighter, you can wrap a washcloth around it and tighten it a little more with your adjustable wrench but keep in mind, you don’t want to tighten it too much and damage the mounting bracket threads or shower arm. When screwing on the mounting bracket, you want the open piece on the end of the mounting bracket to be facing up and the middle threaded piece on the mounting bracket to be facing down because that’s where you’ll attach your shower hose.

Step 3: Assemble
After you’ve installed the mounting bracket, you’ll attach the shower head hose. You’ll attach the shower hose by screwing the regular nut-type end of the hose onto the mounting bracket clockwise and tightening it by hand. Then you’ll attach your new handheld shower head to the cone-shaped end of the shower hose by screwing it on clockwise until tight.

The cone-shaped end of the hose that’s now screwed onto your new handheld shower head handle will slide perfectly into the mounting bracket so you can return your handheld shower head to it’s mounting bracket when it’s not in use or when you want to use it as a mounted shower head. Following these simple and easy handheld shower head installation steps will help you to install your new shower head quickly and effortlessly.

How Can I Fix My Handheld ShowerHead

Leaking Shower Head
Shut off the water to your shower by closing the water valve. Using an adjustable wrench, carefully loosen and remove the shower head from the hose. Check the O-rings inside the shower head for any signs of damage or wear. If they are cracked or worn, replace them. Wrap the plumber's tape (Teflon tape) around the threads of the shower head and the hose to create a watertight seal. Screw the shower head back onto the hose and tighten it securely with the adjustable wrench. Once everything is reassembled, turn the water supply back on and check for any leaks. If there are no leaks, you've successfully fixed your leaking shower head.

Low Water Pressure
Ensure that the hose is not kinked or damaged in any way. Replace it if necessary. Over time, mineral deposits can clog the nozzles, reducing water pressure. Fill a bucket with a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar or a calcium and lime remover. Remove the shower head and soak it in the solution for a few hours. This will dissolve any mineral build-up. After soaking, rinse the shower head with clean water and reattach it to the hose. Some shower heads have a flow restrictor to reduce water usage. If your water pressure is still low after cleaning, you can remove the flow restrictor by unscrewing the shower head. Be sure to keep the restrictor in case you want to reattach it later.

Stuck Adjustment Mechanism
Unscrew the shower head from the hose using an adjustable wrench. Check for any visible debris, soap scum, or mineral deposits that might be preventing the mechanism from moving. Use a screwdriver or a brush to clean the area thoroughly. Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the adjustment mechanism. This will help it move smoothly. Screw the shower head back onto the hose and ensure it's secure.

How do you Clean a blocked Handheld Showerheads

Use Vinegar
You can clean a shower head using nothing more than distilled white vinegar, the king of household cleaning hacks. Simply remove the shower head and soak it in a bowl of vinegar for a few hours. If the buildup is particularly heavy, you may need to soak the shower head overnight. Once the shower head has soaked, scrub it with a toothbrush to remove any remaining deposits. Finally, rinse the shower head well and reattach it to the shower arm. Try running the shower to clean it once again from the inside and get rid of any remaining vinegar. You should now notice an improvement in water pressure.

Use Calcium, Lime, and Rust Remover Solution (CLR Solution)
Calcium, Lime, and Rust Remover (CLR) solution can help to clean a shower head and restore it to its original condition. It's also quicker than using vinegar! Take a plastic container or small bucket and pour into it the CLR solution and warm water in the ratio of 1:1. Then, simply remove the shower head and soak it in the cleaning solution for around two minutes (or as directed by the manufacturer). Afterwards, throw away the cleaning solution and rinse the shower head gently. At this point, you can use a soft brush to scrub away any remaining deposits. Rinse the shower head again thoroughly with water and reattach it to the shower arm.

Use Baking Soda
Simply mix one cup of baking soda with enough water to form a paste, then apply the paste to the shower head and let it sit for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes have passed, use a toothbrush or other soft brush to scrub away the residue. Finally, rinse the shower head with warm water to remove any remaining traces of baking soda. Attach the shower head back to the arm and turn the water on to remove any remaining bits of sediment and/or the baking soda paste.

FAQ

Q: How do handheld shower heads compare to fixed ones in terms of functionality?

A: Compared to a fixed head, handheld shower heads offer more versatility by allowing you to direct the water flow to where you need it most, ideal for rinsing and cleaning. Fixed traditional shower heads typically provide a consistent, hands-free experience which some users may prefer.

Q: Is it possible to add a handheld shower head to an existing shower?

A: Yes, it's often straightforward to add a handheld shower head to most existing showers. You'll need an adapter to connect it to your current plumbing system. Contact a professional plumber if you are unsure about the process.

Q: Can I attach a handheld shower head to a bath tap?

A: You may be able to use adapters to connect a handheld showerhead directly to a bath tap, or you can choose bath shower mixer taps as an all-in-one solution.

Q: Do handheld shower heads have flow restrictors?

A: Inside every shower head is a small part called a flow restrictor or flow regulator. This part is designed to control the flow of water to the shower head and it has a significant effect on the water pressure in your shower.

Q: How do I increase the water pressure in my handheld shower head?

A: Most low-flow showerheads have a rubber pressure-reducing valve (called a regulator) to maintain a lower pressure. You can increase the flow by simply taking it out. You could also consider enlarging the hole that allows water into your showerhead with a drill to increase the amount of water coming through.

Q: Are handheld shower heads worth it?

A: The versatility of handheld shower heads is hard to beat. From their adjustability to their range of features, they offer a tailored shower experience. Plus, for households with elderly members, children, or pets, they're often the preferred choice.

Q: Why is there no pressure in my handheld shower head?
